THE RAILWAY GALLERY Due to the fact that ( South Yorkshire Railway ) was once the principle railway serving Chapeltown and Ecclesfield I have included a brief account of Sheffields railway heritage. For more infomation see ( Ecclesfield site ) The South Yorkshire Railway conected to the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway at Wincobank and then had access from Wicker to Ardsley Jnc ( Barnsley ). This was then taken over by the Midland Railway, and then by Great Central Railway which had a new terminus at Victoria. This connected to Bridgehouses then on to (Manchester) via ( Woodhead). See The Woodhead Site Nowdays you can walk most of the old route as the Trans Pennine Trail. It now Joins the main platform at Meadowhall as walkway. However a new development at Smithy Wood may mean a detour ( It was never an official trail but was negotiable ). Supertram now uses part of the old network from Woodburn Jnc. to Meadowhall. Details of local walks will be added. Here and there are still signs of old bridges etc, around Westwood and Chapeltown areas. Not forgetting the old station Chapeltown And Thorncliffe which is now a private residence on White Lane. This can be seen just below the Hesley Scout Camp
